History and Legacy: In the Name of Humanitarianism
Chisholm Institute was formally established on July 1, 1998, through the merger of multiple technical colleges including Frankston and Dandenong. Yet its historical roots trace back to the early 19th century, when the founding of the Frankston and Dandenong campuses initiated the institution’s vocational education mission.
The college bears the name of Caroline Chisholm, an early Australian reformer and humanitarian. Her motto—“Serve all people impartially, regardless of nationality or faith”—remains the educational philosophy upheld by the institution to this day. From its origins as a local technical school serving the community, Chisholm has evolved into Victoria’s premier public TAFE institution, operating across seven campuses and serving over 50,000 students. This journey spans two centuries of steadfast commitment and transformative change. Its rich history bears not only the marks of time but also a steadfast dedication to preserving the founding principles of vocational education.
Research Strength and Innovation: Industry-Leading Practical Training Facilities
Qisimen College’s innovative prowess in vocational education is remarkable. As Australia’s only vocational technical college accredited by Engineers Australia, its standing in engineering education is unshakable.
The college boasts a government-funded Engineering and Science Integrated Training Center equipped with cutting-edge, industry-standard facilities. The newly constructed $67.6 million vocational skills training facility at the Frankson campus offers high-demand programs like the Community Services Diploma, Certificate IV in Mental Health, and Certificate IV in Cybersecurity, serving over 2,000 students annually. The Sustainable Water Management Centre at the Cranbourne campus stands as Australia’s premier environmental horticulture training hub, featuring unique facilities including a water treatment plant, water quality testing laboratory, and civil construction training ground. These innovative facilities not only support teaching but also foster workforce development partnerships with leading water agencies like South East Water, achieving deep integration of industry, academia, and research.
Teaching Model and Signature Programs: Practice-Driven Vocational Education
Guided by the core philosophy of “practice-oriented, employment-driven,” Qismon College ensures 70% of its courses involve hands-on practice, with laboratory equipment updated in sync with industry standards. A Guide to the Chisholm Institute Degree Process
In small-class settings, instructors with substantial industry experience provide direct guidance, enabling students to master skills in authentic work environments. Students in the Beauty Therapy program gain hands-on experience at the on-campus Mysa Salon and Spa and engage in deep collaborations with industry leaders like Peninsula Hot Springs. Graduate Liara Murray secured a position at Peninsula Hot Springs after a study visit through such industry partnerships, launching her career in beauty.
The Bachelor of Engineering Technology program similarly emphasizes practical application. Thai student Thanaphol secured a full-time position as a Quality Engineer at McConnell Dowell following his internship there. This seamless transition from internship to employment exemplifies the essence of QSM’s educational model.
International Collaboration & Exchange: Global Pathways for Further Study
QSM College maintains robust credit transfer agreements with multiple top Australian universities, establishing clear pathways for student progression. Upon completing a QSM diploma or advanced diploma, students can transfer to Monash University, Deakin University, La Trobe University, RMIT University, and others to pursue undergraduate degrees. They may receive 1-2 years of credit exemptions, enabling them to obtain both a TAFE diploma and a university bachelor’s degree in as little as three years.
The joint Business Diploma and Bachelor of Commerce program with Deakin University requires students to complete 8 units at the Dandenong campus in the first year. Upon meeting requirements, they may transfer to Deakin University for further studies. In China, Qisimon College collaborates with Shandong Women’s University to offer higher vocational education programs in Big Data and Accounting, and partners with Zhuhai City Vocational College for joint accounting training. This cross-border educational cooperation enables students worldwide to benefit from Qisimon’s premium vocational education resources.
