International Collaboration and Global Campuses

NYU’s global strategy is highly distinctive, best known for its global campuses in Abu Dhabi (NYU Abu Dhabi) and Shanghai (NYU Shanghai), which, together with the New York main campus, form the “Global Network University.” In addition, NYU operates study centers and collaborative programs in London, Paris, Delhi, Sydney, and other locations to support short-term student exchanges and internships. This global campus system provides students with cross-cultural learning pathways and international professional networks, making it particularly attractive to students seeking experiences across multiple countries. As an observer, I believe NYU’s internationalization efforts are both forward-thinking and challenging: how to maintain consistent academic quality while addressing the localization needs of different campuses remains a long-term issue to be resolved.

Two Types of Financial Aid

It is important to note that U.S. universities categorize financial aid for students into two types: Financial Aid and Scholarships. Financial Aid is not available to international students; it is only awarded to U.S. citizens and green card holders. As an international student, you can only apply for Scholarships. Scholarships are also divided into two types: Merit-based Scholarships, which are awarded to students with excellent academic performance; these do not require a separate application and are automatically granted upon admission. The other type is Need-based Scholarships, which are awarded to students from families with limited financial means. However, it is important to note that since U.S. universities rely heavily on international students to pay tuition fees, except for the Ivy League and a few other top-tier institutions, whether or not you need a scholarship can affect your chances of admission. In other words, if you expect the school to provide financial aid, your chances of admission may be slightly lower.

Overall, top-tier comprehensive universities and liberal arts colleges—especially the latter—are quite generous toward students, and liberal arts colleges tend to have relatively more financial resources.

Faculty Strength and Student-Faculty Ratio

NYU brings together a large number of professors and scholars with international reputations in their respective fields, boasting top-tier faculty resources particularly in the arts, law, business, media, and computer science. The faculty’s backgrounds are diverse, ranging from Nobel and Pulitzer Prize laureates to top industry practitioners. The student-to-faculty ratio generally tends to be on the lower side, which facilitates small-group discussions and mentorship-based teaching; however, due to the large intake in popular programs, there are significant differences in class sizes across different schools. My personal observation is that while NYU invests sufficiently in providing high-quality faculty, students must proactively seek opportunities to engage with professors to truly benefit from these resources.

Library Resources and Collections

NYU’s library system spans the main campus and global campuses, offering extensive print and digital resources, with particularly deep specialized collections in law, the social sciences, and the humanities. As NYU’s main library, Bobst Library not only houses a vast collection but also provides open study spaces, thematic archives, and digital resource support. The library also collaborates with various cultural institutions in New York, boasting a rich collection of special collections and manuscripts. For research-oriented students, NYU’s library system is a vital resource for in-depth academic exploration. I believe the true value of NYU’s libraries lies in their integration with the city’s resources: students can easily access rare materials from museums and archives, which is a significant advantage for fostering interdisciplinary research.

Employment Rates and Career Outcomes

NYU graduates rank among the top in the U.S. for employability, with particularly competitive employment rates and starting salaries in the business school, law school, and arts and communications programs. Thanks to New York City’s status as a global hub for finance, media, and technology, NYU students have extensive access to internship and job opportunities. NYU alumni can be found everywhere from Wall Street investment banks and top law firms to Hollywood production companies and Silicon Valley startups. According to historical statistics, NYU’s graduate employment rate remains consistently high, and the alumni network plays a significant role in recruitment. From my observation, NYU’s Career Services and industry partnerships provide crucial support for student employment, but success still depends heavily on students’ initiative and the accumulation of internship experience.
