UC Transfer Champion for 35 Consecutive Years
SMC’s greatest strength lies in its nationally leading transfer system. According to the latest official data from the University of California system, SMC has held the top spot for the number of students transferring to the University of California system for 35 consecutive years. During the 2024–2025 academic year, a total of 995 students successfully transferred to various UC campuses. Among them, UCLA was the top choice for SMC transfer students, with 437 students admitted. Additionally, SMC is the college outside the New York area that sends the most transfer students to the prestigious Ivy League institution Columbia University. In the fall of 2025, a total of 23 SMC students successfully enrolled at Columbia.
SMC offers the TAG Transfer Guarantee Program, which allows eligible students with a qualifying GPA to gain direct admission to six UC campuses, Loyola Marymount University, and other prestigious institutions, providing students with a clear path to higher education.
Diverse Academic Programs
SMC operates multiple campuses and offers over 80 academic programs, covering popular fields such as business administration, economics, computer science, communication, biology, and engineering. The college boasts one of the nation’s top art mentorship programs, a School of Entertainment Technology with close ties to Hollywood, and the state-of-the-art John A. O’Hara Observatory.
Affordability and Admission Requirements
SMC’s tuition for international students is highly competitive. Based on the 2026–2027 academic year, annual tuition and fees for international students are approximately $11,664. When factoring in living expenses such as room and board, textbooks, and insurance, the total annual budget is approximately $34,000—just one-third of the cost of a four-year U.S. university.
Regarding admissions, SMC follows an open-enrollment policy with a high acceptance rate. International students must achieve a TOEFL score of 70 or an IELTS score of 5.5 and be at least 18 years old to apply. All incoming students are required to take math and English placement tests upon enrollment to ensure they are placed in the appropriate course levels.
Students who do not meet the language requirements may first enroll in ESL courses before formally entering the degree program.
Choosing Santa Monica College means choosing a high-value, academically rigorous, and direct pathway to top universities. Here, you will not only earn solid credits for your freshman and sophomore years but also secure a “golden ticket” to top universities in Los Angeles.
Campus Life
The campus is beautiful, located right next to the beach, and offers excellent public transportation access. The school boasts abundant resources, including a Transfer Center, a Career Center, and various other programs designed to help students achieve their goals. My favorite program is “Bodega” (the student food pantry), where all students can receive fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, pre-packaged lunches, free clothing, and sometimes even flowers—all at no cost. Having easy access to basic necessities is truly important. I’m currently majoring in Theatre Technical Production. Our professors are incredibly talented—they’re industry professionals themselves—and they’re very supportive of our needs and interests in the theater field, offering advice on job hunting. The campus atmosphere is diverse, and it’s wonderful to meet classmates from different backgrounds and share our cultures with one another.
