History and Founding Background
The history of Tennessee Tech University dates back to 1915, when Tennessee Governor Thomas Rye signed a charter formally establishing Tennessee Institute of Technology in Cookeville. Initially, the institute admitted high school and junior college students with the aim of providing Central Tennessee with a trained workforce. In 1965, Tennessee Institute of Technology was elevated to university status and renamed Tennessee Technological University, focusing on engineering and technology education.
