Founded in 1951 as the “Kumasi Technical College,” KNUST did not receive university status until 1961, making it Ghana’s first university of science and technology. The campus spans approximately seven square kilometers, featuring beautiful modern buildings and lush green lawns that provide a refreshing environment for academic research. KNUST comprises six colleges: the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Arts and the Built Environment, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Science. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, it is ranked between 1201 and 1400, and in the THE World University Rankings, it is ranked between 1201 and 1500. Curriculum and Flexible Learning
KNUST’s School of Distance Learning offers a total of eight diploma programs, ten undergraduate bridging programs, and forty-five one-year graduate programs, covering fields ranging from agriculture to business. In 2024, the school added diploma programs in Medical Laboratory Science, Health Information Management, and Health Communication—all within the health sciences field—primarily to meet the current demand for talent in the healthcare industry. For nurses who have already obtained diplomas in related fields, KNUST has condensed its undergraduate nursing program into a two-year duration, enabling working nurses to advance their academic qualifications. Additionally, the university has engaged in discussions with Huawei regarding potential collaboration, planning to introduce AI-powered smart classrooms to drive digital transformation in the education sector.
