A Century of History: From Convent to Modern Institution
Vanier College’s history is steeped in a rich cultural heritage. Its origins date back to 1847, when the Sisters of the Holy Cross founded the Sainte-Marie School. Over the following century, the college constructed a total of 10 buildings, numbered from A to N, forming a unique complex of alphabetically named structures. The college is named after General George P. Vanier, Canada’s second Governor General born in Canada. Dual-Track Educational System: 22 Pre-University Programs and 16 Career-Oriented Programs
Vanier College offers diverse academic pathways, encompassing two main categories of programs: two-year Pre-University programs and three-year Career programs, both leading to the DEC (Diplôme d’études collégiales) university qualification.
The Pre-University program emphasizes breadth in theory and concepts, laying the foundation for university studies. It offers 22 specializations, including Sciences (Health Sciences, Pure Sciences, and Applied Sciences), Social Sciences (Economics, International Studies, Global Studies, etc.), Business (Accounting and Finance, Entrepreneurship, etc.), and Humanities and Communication Arts (Creative Arts, Media Studies, etc.).
The Career program, on the other hand, focuses on applied skills, enabling graduates to enter the job market directly. It offers 16 specializations, such as Nursing, Construction Technology, Computer Science and Technology, Business Administration, and Industrial Electronics.
Consequences of Losing a Canadian University Diploma
- Hinders Job Search: A diploma is the primary document employers use to verify academic qualifications; without it, your competitiveness in the job market will be significantly reduced.
- Delays in Immigration: When applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) or immigration programs (such as the Express Entry system), you must submit your diploma as required; failure to provide proof may result in processing delays or even rejection.
Convenient Transportation Near the City Center and Interconnected Campuses
Vanier College also boasts an excellent geographical location. The main campus is located in the Saint-Laurent district on the Island of Montreal, covering approximately 180,000 square meters, and is just a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Côte-Vertu and Du Collège metro stations on the Orange Line. Additionally, the college operates a modern satellite campus in Beaumont, near the Acadie metro station. The two campuses are about a 20-minute drive apart, allowing students to move between them with ease.
An International Community Renowned for Its Multiculturalism
Vanier College’s community culture is one of its most distinctive hallmarks. Often referred to as “Quebec’s most diverse college,” it currently has over 6,700 full-time degree students and approximately 2,000 continuing education students. Students from every continent converge here, and the campus is home to more than 60 active student clubs. The college offers an International Peer Mentor Program for new international students, where upperclassmen are paired with freshmen to help students from different cultural backgrounds quickly build trust and connections.
Vanier College attracts students from around the world with its accessible admission process and affordable tuition. International applicants must submit their applications through the SRAM system by March 1; the minimum language requirements are a TOEFL iBT score of 80 or an overall IELTS score of 6.5. Tuition for international students ranges from approximately CAD 5,500 to CAD 8,500 per year. To receive DECcertification, international students must pass the Quebec Standardized French Test and achieve a B2 level before graduation. The college offers systematic intensive French courses and tutoring to help students meet graduation requirements.
