On the Atlantic coast of Ireland’s west coast, a young and ambitious university of technology is rapidly emerging. Atlantic Technological University (ATU) was officially established in April 2022 as Ireland’s fourth university of technology. Formed through the merger of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Sligo Institute of Technology, and Loughenee Institute of Technology, it builds on their combined 50-year legacy of vocational and technical education. Today, ATU has grown into a major public institution with nine campuses spanning the counties of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, and Roscommon, serving a student body of over 30,000.

Architecture Program Holds Dual Accreditation from RIAI and RIBA

The architecture program at ATU’s Sligo campus is the university’s most distinctive flagship discipline. It received full accreditation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2026, having previously earned full accreditation from the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI), making it the only architecture degree program in Ireland to hold both of these top-tier international accreditations. ATU is also the first university in Ireland to receive Advance HE accreditation, signifying official national recognition of its teaching quality. Working in Europe with a University of Ireland diploma is a wonderful experience

Nine Campuses Along the Wild Atlantic Way

ATU’s nine campuses are spread across Ireland’s scenic west coast. From Letterkenny in Donegal to Galway City, and on to Castlebar in County Mayo and the St. Angela’s Campus in Roscommon, each location boasts unique natural landscapes and cultural heritage. The Letterkenny campus, nestled between the beach and the mountains along Ireland’s renowned “Wild Atlantic Way,” is ideal for students who love the outdoors; the Galway campus, meanwhile, is situated in a vibrant student city that hosts a variety of music festivals and arts events throughout the year. Regular shuttle bus services connect the main academic buildings and residential areas across all campuses, and students can also easily travel between campuses using the extensive public transportation network.

Working in Europe with an Atlantic Technological University Degree

Holding a degree from Atlantic Technological University (ATU) will give you a significant advantage in the European job market. Your degree is globally recognized and backed by Ireland’s official “TrustEd Ireland” quality certification—a national mark of excellence for international students.

Crucially, the data speaks for itself: 94% of ATU graduates secure employment or continue their studies within nine months of graduation. This is thanks to ATU’s close ties with industry; over 65% of programs offer internship opportunities, allowing you to gain the practical experience highly valued by European employers.

Ireland’s attractive immigration policies provide a clear pathway to residency. As a non-EU graduate, you can apply for the “Graduate Scheme,” which offers a 1G visa valid for 12 months (undergraduate) or 24 months (master’s), allowing you to live and work full-time without needing a prior job offer. This period enables you to gain experience and transition to a long-term work permit, such as the “Key Skills Employment Permit” issued for shortage occupations.

Over 70 Student Clubs and Sports Teams

ATU places great emphasis on students’ extracurricular experiences, with over 70 active student clubs and sports teams across its campuses. From outdoor clubs like sailing, rock climbing, and surfing, to interest groups such as photography and social clubs, to student unions and organizations in each district, ATU’s club ecosystem covers a wide range of interests. Each campus also has its own sports teams and athletic facilities, and students represent their respective campuses in the annual intercollegiate leagues, passing on their passion beyond the classroom from one generation to the next.
