History and Heritage
The history of Agossi University is one of continuous consolidation and expansion, with roots tracing back to several specialized institutions established in the 20th century. Its core components include the American School of Professional Psychology founded in the 1970s, the University of Sarasota established in 1922, and the Minnesota Medical College founded in 1961. In 1992, the Agossi Education Group acquired the University of Sarasota, followed by the Minnesota Medical College in 1998. In 2001, with the acquisition of the Agossi Education Group by the Education Management Corporation (EDMC), these three institutions formally merged to form the new Agossi University system.
Prior to its closure, Agossi University had grown into a vast educational network with 28 campuses across 13 U.S. states, serving a total student population of approximately 18,000. Its core mission centered on professional education, offering multi-tiered programs from associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to master’s and doctoral degrees. The institution developed distinctive strengths particularly in psychology, health sciences, and business disciplines. In 2011, the university transferred its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

- College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences: As the university’s core college, it offers Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology programs. Specializations include Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Behavioral Health Counseling, and Exercise and Sport Psychology. The Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at select campuses has received accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA).

For instance, in the Counseling Psychology Master’s program, students must complete 600 hours of practicum and receive faculty supervision during practicum seminars. In the Master of Education Administration program, students’ 240-hour internships are jointly supervised and evaluated by faculty and school administrators.
