History and Heritage

The history of Agossi University is one of continuous consolidation and expansion, with roots tracing back to several specialized institutions established in the 20th century. Its core components include the American School of Professional Psychology founded in the 1970s, the University of Sarasota established in 1922, and the Minnesota Medical College founded in 1961. In 1992, the Agossi Education Group acquired the University of Sarasota, followed by the Minnesota Medical College in 1998. In 2001, with the acquisition of the Agossi Education Group by the Education Management Corporation (EDMC), these three institutions formally merged to form the new Agossi University system.

Prior to its closure, Agossi University had grown into a vast educational network with 28 campuses across 13 U.S. states, serving a total student population of approximately 18,000. Its core mission centered on professional education, offering multi-tiered programs from associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to master’s and doctoral degrees. The institution developed distinctive strengths particularly in psychology, health sciences, and business disciplines. In 2011, the university transferred its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Comprehensive Colleges and Programs

Agoshi University’s academic programs are highly career-oriented, primarily organized under the following colleges:

  • College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences: As the university’s core college, it offers Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology programs. Specializations include Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Behavioral Health Counseling, and Exercise and Sport Psychology. The Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at select campuses has received accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA).
  • School of Business: Offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degrees with specializations in Marketing, Management, and Organizational Leadership.
  • School of Education: Focuses on cultivating leaders in education, providing Master of Education (EdM) and Doctor of Education (EdD) programs. Primary concentrations include Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Educational Administration (designed to help graduates obtain principal certification).
  • School of Health Sciences: Offers programs such as the Master of Public Health (MPH), preparing professionals to work in communities and healthcare institutions.
  • Undergraduate College: Provides foundational degrees for students entering the workforce or pursuing further studies, with majors including Psychology, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, and General Studies.

Practice-Oriented Faculty

As a career-focused university, Agossi University emphasizes industry experience and practical backgrounds in faculty recruitment. Its faculty comprises scholars and professionals who combine academic expertise with extensive industry experience.

In accordance with the university’s curriculum requirements, instructors not only deliver classroom instruction but also bear significant responsibility for guiding student practice. For instance, in the Counseling Psychology Master’s program, students must complete 600 hours of practicum and receive faculty supervision during practicum seminars. Instructors guide students in reflecting on practical experiences while imparting essential skills and professional attitudes required in real-world settings. In the Master of Education Administration program, students’ 240-hour internships are jointly supervised and evaluated by faculty and school administrators.

This faculty configuration ensures students acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills directly applicable to future professional settings.

Student Life and Community Culture

Located within urban commercial districts, Agoshi University’s campuses offer students a campus experience deeply integrated with metropolitan life. Taking the Twin Cities campus as an example, the university provides extensive support services and activity opportunities.

Student Support Services: The university offers student counseling services and additional mentor support to help students gain necessary guidance in both academic and personal development.

Student Organizations: The Twin Cities campus encourages student participation in various organizations. Through these club activities, students can expand their professional networks and cultivate leadership and teamwork skills.

Convenient Location: Taking the Seattle campus as an example, its campus is located within an office building just two blocks from the waterfront, allowing students to conveniently access the city’s commercial, cultural, and entertainment resources.

Community Building: Despite the dispersed campuses, the university brings together students with shared career goals through specialized academic programs, fostering close-knit peer communities in both classroom and practical settings.

Career-Oriented Employment and Development

Agos University adopts a “practice-theory integration” model for career preparation, aiming to equip students with workplace readiness upon graduation.

Internships as Core Components: The university mandates internships as integral course requirements. For instance, the Master of Counseling Psychology program requires 600 hours of fieldwork in authentic mental health service settings. The Master of Educational Administration program mandates 240 hours of administrative internships. The Master of Science in Sport Psychology also includes a supervised practicum. This intensive hands-on training allows students to gain valuable industry experience early on.

Licensing and Certification Pathways: Many programs, such as Clinical Psychology, Counseling, and Educational Leadership, are designed to help students meet licensing or certification requirements in their professional fields. For example, the Counseling Psychology program is structured to meet California licensure application standards, allowing graduates to pursue further certification as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC). The Educational Administration program prepares students to obtain the California Level I Principal Credential.

Career Pathways: Graduates of the Master of Sports Psychology program may pursue careers in professional sports organizations, schools, and sports rehabilitation facilities. Potential roles include coach, personal trainer, or physical education teacher.
