Academic reputation and rankings: top 4% of global research universities
Birkbeck shines in global rankings. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, the university is ranked 354th in the world, placing it in the top 4% of the world’suniversities, a significant jump from 408th in 2025, and 38th in the UK, up from 41st in 2026. Birkbeck is ranked 256th in the world in Time Magazine’s inaugural ‘World’s Top Universities’ rankings for 2026. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Ranking 2025, Birkbeck is ranked 201st-300th in the world.
In the field of research, 83% of Birkbeck ‘s research outputs were rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally outstanding’ in the REF 2021 assessment.
Birkbeck is ranked 2nd in the UK (1st in London) for English and Literature and 4th in the UK (2nd in London) for History of Art.
Location and resources: the academic heart of London
Birkbeck’s main campus is in Bloomsbury, which The Times said was “one of the best places to live in London in 2025”. The campus is surrounded by bookshops, cafes, museums and lots of tree-lined open spaces.
Because it’s part of the University of London, Birkbeck students have access to the Senate House Library – an iconic building with a distinctly Art Deco feel, and the center of the University’s academic activity.
Within walking distance are world-class cultural resources such as the British Museum and the British Library. The campus is close to major transportation hubs such as Euston, St. Pancras and King’s Cross, and a new campus in Stratford, East London, opened in 2013.

Birkbeck is one of the world’s leading research universities in terms of research strength, with 83% of the College’s research outputs rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2021 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment. 85% of its research impact cases were also rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Ninety-one percent of research activity in Computer Science was rated as internationally excellent; English Literature was ranked first in London and second in the UK; Art and Design was ranked fourth in the UK; and Biological Sciences was ranked 11th in the UK.
Unique Philosophy: Education to Change Lives
Birkbeck College was founded on a simple idea – to provide higher education opportunities for ordinary workers who had to work during the day. At the time, this idea was revolutionary. This core philosophy of ‘education for all’ continues today. All classes at Birkbeck are held from 6pm to 9pm, allowing students to work, do internships or take care of personal commitments during the day and then come back in the evening to study. Today, the College has more than 4,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students, the vast majority of whom study part-time, balancing their academic and professional careers.
