The story of Bowling Green State University began in 1910 when the Ohio State Legislature passed a bill establishing two normal schools in the northern part of the state—one in Kent (later Kent State University) and the other in Bowling Green. In 1914, the institution formally welcomed its first class of 304 students, supported by just 21 faculty and staff members.
Initially named the Bowling Green Normal School, the institution focused exclusively on teacher training. Its first president, Homer Williams, demonstrated remarkable foresight. Guided by the principle that “future goals direct present actions,” he began awarding four-year bachelor’s degrees even before the school received official authorization. By the time state approval was granted in 1929, the institution had already conferred 253 four-year degrees.

Over the following decades, the university established its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and Graduate School, opening the Firelands Campus in 1965.
