The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), founded in 1944 and located on Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York, is a renowned public college of art and design within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. From its inception, founder Mortimer Ritt envisioned FIT as “a design school akin to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,” a vision that has become a reality over the course of more than eight decades.

History and Founding Background

FIT received accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 1957 and is the second-largest state college in New York City. In 2025, the school reached a historic milestone with the official opening of the Joyce F. Brown Academic Building, a new $188.5 million facility—the first new academic building on the FIT campus in nearly 50 years. The new building features 26 energy-efficient classrooms and studios, as well as the largest on-campus knitting and weaving lab in the United States, and has earned LEED Gold certification, demonstrating the school’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and educational innovation.

Academic Reputation and Global Rankings

FIT’s position in the field of fashion education is unassailable. According to the 2024 CEOWORLD Ranking of the World’s Best Fashion Schools, FIT ranks 2nd globally and 1st in the U.S., surpassing Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins in London. Its graphic design program was ranked 8th in the U.S. by College Magazine, while its interior design program was ranked 6th in the U.S. by Design Intelligence.

The university offers nearly 50 majors across associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and professional master’s degree programs. Its main schools include the School of Art and Design, the School of Business, the School of Liberal Arts, and the Graduate School. Key programs include Fashion Design, Accessories Design, Fashion Management, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, Toy Design, and Jewelry Design, covering virtually every aspect of the fashion industry. Employment Outcomes and Alumni Development

FIT graduates demonstrate exceptional career outcomes. According to the 2025 official survey, 76% of undergraduate graduates are either employed or pursuing further education, with 82% working in fields related to their major. More than two-thirds of undergraduate graduates earn an annual salary of $50,000 or more.

Internships are a core feature of FIT’s educational program—75% of undergraduate graduates completed an internship during their studies, with 22% securing employment directly through their internships. As many as 82% of alumni say they would choose FIT again, and 72% would select the same major, fully demonstrating students’ high regard for the institution’s education.

Location and Campus Facilities

FIT is located in Manhattan, New York—the global fashion capital, adjacent to the renowned Manhattan Garment District, where numerous fashion brands and designers come to research and source fabrics. The campus comprises nine academic buildings, the FIT Museum, multiple design studios, and computer labs. The museum houses a collection of over 50,000 garments and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present, including works by design masters such as Chanel and Dior, and is open to the public free of charge.

Notable Alumni and Industry Impact

FIT has nurtured countless leaders in the fashion industry, including: Calvin Klein, founder of the Calvin Klein brand; Michael Kors, founder of the Michael Kors brand; Zhu Qinqi, founder of Nautica; Nina Garcia, Editor-in-Chief of *Elle* magazine; and Leslie Brogert, founder of bareMinerals. The success of these alumni attests to FIT’s excellence in fashion design education on a global scale.
