The history of Folkwang University of the Arts is one of continuous integration and innovation in arts education. In 1927, Opera Director Rudolf Schulz-Dänberg and ballet choreographer Kurt Jooss co-founded the “Fukwang School,” dedicated to interdisciplinary education in music, dance, and speech. Through the collaborative efforts of Rudolf von Laban and Kurt Jooss, the institution became a pioneer in German dance education starting in 1929.
In 1963, the Fuchwangen Academy was formally established as a comprehensive university of the arts. Subsequently, it integrated the Duisburg Conservatory of Music (1972), the Bochum Academy of Dramatic Arts (2000), and the North Rhine-Westphalia Orchestra Center in Dortmund (2004). In 2007, the Design Department, previously part of the University of Duisburg-Essen, returned to the institution. In 2010, the school was officially renamed the Folkwang University of the Arts, signifying the unification of all artistic disciplines.
