Hochschule Wismar was founded in 1908 by the renowned German architect Robert Schmidt, who also served as its first president. As the region’s oldest institution for training engineers, the university currently has approximately 7,600 students, including over 1,000 international students from around the world. As a public university, it offers tuition-free education, charging only a semester registration fee of approximately 63–72 euros per semester, which significantly reduces the financial burden on students. Historical Heritage and Campus Locations

The university’s tradition of maritime studies dates back to the Grand Ducal Nautical School established in Wustrow in 1846, a legacy that continues to this day. The College of Applied Arts, founded in 1949, was merged into the university in 1992, further enriching the institution’s design program offerings. Today, in addition to its main campus in Wismar, the university operates two satellite campuses in Warnemünde and Poel, which focus on maritime studies and select engineering disciplines, respectively.
