The background of KPU’s founding stems from British Columbia’s need to “realign” educational services in 1981. At that time, Douglas College was split up, and the campuses south of the Fraser River were consolidated into a new college named Kwantlen College. The name “Kwantlen” originates from the local Indigenous language and means “the tireless runner.” The name was selected through a campus-wide naming contest and approved by Joe Gabriel, Grand Chief of the Kwantlen First Nation.
