History and Founding Background
The University of Utah was founded on February 28, 1850, by Brigham Young, a leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was originally named the “University of Deseret.” It was the first state university west of the Mississippi River and is the oldest institution of higher education in Utah. In 1892, the university was officially renamed the University of Utah, a name it has retained to this day. As a flagship public university, the University of Utah has achieved remarkable academic accomplishments—it has produced 5 Nobel laureates, 8 MacArthur Fellows, and 3 Turing Award winners, as well as 17 members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, and 22 Rhodes Scholars.
Campus Traditions and Signature Events
The University of Utah boasts a rich array of campus traditions. The “Utes” are a symbol of the university’s athletic culture; this name has been recognized by the Ute Indian Tribe since 1972, as the tribe sought to promote respect for and understanding of Native American culture.
The “U” on the mountaintop is one of the University of Utah’s most iconic traditions, dating back to 1907. A large stone “U” has stood atop Mount Van Cott, overlooking the entire campus. Whenever a University of Utah athletic team wins, the “U” is illuminated in red. If the victory occurs in an away game, it glows white.
The university’s Homecoming celebration began in 1923 and has a century-long history. It is the largest campus event of the fall, with a variety of activities—including the Red Rock Concert, Songfest, the Food Can Sculpture Contest, the Homecoming Football Game, and a fireworks display—that bring alumni and current students together.
The student fan club “MUSS” has been named the best student fan group in the United States and has approximately 7,400 members. They stand throughout the game cheering for the home team, leading the crowd in chanting “First down!” and performing the U-shaped “Chop” gesture with their arms. After the game, they join the players in singing the school anthem, “Utah Man.” Every spring, the university hosts the Red-White Game, an event that brings this tradition to its climax.
