The “Kårhuset” student dining hall on Umeå University’s campus has introduced a new eco-label food system in the post-pandemic era, offering not only diverse dining options but also highlighting a strong commitment to environmental protection. The campus community is distinctly international. Various parties, social events, and ski trips organized by the student union greatly promote community integration, fostering a cohesive campus culture. Particularly noteworthy is the “International Buddy Programme” implemented by the university’s International Office, which pairs new students with local or current international peers to help them integrate more quickly. From the “Orientation Week” ceremony marking the start of the new semester to the celebratory events at the end of the term, campus life is permeated with a strong sense of belonging. It is precisely this unique atmosphere that has led Umeå University to be named “Sweden’s Safest Student City” in the Swedish National Student Survey.
Safety Index and Campus Security
Safety is an indispensable cornerstone for creating a secure learning environment. Umeå University is committed to building a comprehensive security system: campus security teams conduct round-the-clock patrols; card-access systems are installed at the entrances of all major buildings to strictly restrict access by non-university personnel. To accommodate students’ late-night study needs, the university operates a free night shuttle bus (Nattbussen) covering the main campus, providing students with convenient “door-to-door” service. In addition, the Student Union organizes night patrol teams to accompany students during the evening, escorting them to bus stops or parking lots. Through the collaborative efforts of the university, the Student Union, and the police, a multi-layered, comprehensive safety network has been established, ensuring that students from around the world can study and live here with peace of mind, feeling secure and reassured.
Strategic Planning to Meet Future Challenges
As it enters a new phase of development, Umeå University is fully committed to advancing its ambitious “Umeå University’s Strategy 2030” initiative. One of the core initiatives of this plan is “Educational Transformation,” which aims to integrate all degree programs under a “transferable skills” framework and establish key competencies—such as AI literacy, anti-data racism, digital ethics, and systems thinking—as mandatory general education modules for all students. To expand global collaboration, the university has established a new innovation center in Vaasa, Finland, and is partnering with internationally renowned companies such as ABB and Wärtsilä to build joint laboratories. Additionally, all engineering master’s programs include a cooperative education (CO-OP) module, ensuring that students gain 6 to 12 months of full-time internship experience at leading Swedish companies before graduation.
