The University of Groningen (RUG) was founded in 1614 and is the second-oldest university in the Netherlands, with a history spanning more than 400 years. The University of Groningen performs impressively in the four major global university rankings: 147th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, 75th in the U.S. News Global University Rankings, 82nd in the THE rankings, and 69th in the Shanghai Ranking. In terms of academic achievements, the University of Groningen boasts a total of four Nobel laureates, the most famous of whom is Professor Bernard Feringa, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The university’s undergraduate program “Global Responsibility and Leadership” has been named the best undergraduate program in the Netherlands by the Dutch Higher Education Guide for four consecutive years, scoring 99 out of 100 in the 2024/25 academic year.
