Rapid Growth: From Three Faculties to Sixteen
The predecessor of the University of Ilorin was the University College of Ilorin, established in 1975. Initially comprising only three major faculties—the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Science—it gradually expanded after gaining full university status in 1977. Today, it has evolved into a vast organizational structure comprising 16 faculties and approximately 150 departments, covering a wide range of fields including agriculture, arts, medicine, engineering, law, management, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. It currently has over 50,000 students and nearly 3,500 faculty and staff members.

Notably, alumnus Ameen Gegele Hammed earned a Master of Science in Bio-Resource Engineering from McGill University in Canada with outstanding grades. Official Accreditation and Quality Assurance
The value of a University of Ilorin degree lies in its accreditation by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC). During the 2025 NUC accreditation review, the university submitted 37 programs, of which 36 received full accreditation, with one receiving provisional accreditation, achieving a 100% pass rate. This covers 16 faculties, including the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Technology, and the College of Management. NUC accreditation means that the university’s degrees are accepted by the Nigerian government and recognized worldwide.
