Blockchain Digital Certificates: A World-First Anti-Counterfeiting Innovation
In April 2022, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) took the lead by becoming the first university in South Africa and among the first in Africa to integrate blockchain technology into its graduation certificate anti-counterfeiting system. Since 2022, all new UJ graduation certificates have been equipped with scannable QR codes. This innovative initiative enables global employers and third-party verification agencies to easily scan the QR code using a smartphone to instantly and directly verify the certificate’s authenticity and integrity, without any official intervention. Blockchain-based digital verification technology fundamentally eliminates the problem of certificate forgery and opens an immediate, trustworthy channel for official credential verification for UJ graduates seeking employment, visas, or further education globally.
