University of Prishtina: The Deep Integration of National Revival and Higher Education
In Prishtina, the capital of Kosovo, stands a public institution that deeply integrates the mission of national revival with excellence in higher education—the University of Prishtina. As the oldest and largest public institution of higher education in the Albanian-speaking region, this university—founded in 1970—has become a strategic stepping stone for Albanian-speaking students worldwide to enter the realm of academia, thanks to its membership in the European University Association, official accreditation by the Kosovo Accreditation Agency, and the historic breakthrough of making its debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Over Five Decades of Academic Legacy: A Symbol of the Kosovo Nation
The University of Prishtina was officially established by an act of the Kosovo Assembly on February 15, 1970. Then-Prime Minister Albin Kurti noted: “The history of the University of Prishtina divides Kosovo’s history into two eras: Kosovo before 1970, without a university, and Kosovo after 1970, with a university. “The university is not only Kosovo’s first institution to confer undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees on a large scale, but it also bears the historical mission of the Albanian nation to achieve academic renaissance and integrate with global culture over the past half-century. Official Accreditation and Regional Leadership
The core values of the University of Pristina are rooted in its rigorous official accreditation system. The university has officially received institutional reaccreditation from the Kosovo Accreditation Agency, valid until 2030. The review panel, composed of several international experts, fully affirmed the alignment of its quality assurance mechanisms with international university standards. The university is also a full member of the European University Association, operating and maintaining accreditation in accordance with the standards of the European Higher Education Area, and its degrees hold legal validity within the Albanian-speaking region and beyond.
Recently, the University of Pristina achieved a historic breakthrough by making its debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, becoming the only institution in Kosovo to receive this distinction. In the ORCA academic integrity assessment, the university ranked first among Kosovo’s public universities with a high score of 82.5%. The university comprises 17 faculties and has approximately 54,000 enrolled students, with an overall admission rate of about 40%. It is widely recognized as the academic flagship of the Albanian-speaking region.

Center of Higher Education in the Albanian-Speaking Region
The University of Pristina is widely recognized as the center of higher education in the Albanian-speaking region, long attracting Albanian-speaking students from Albania, North Macedonia, and other areas. The university’s academic strengths center on the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, and medicine, while engineering, law, and economics are also traditional strengths of the institution. As the second-largest Albanian-language public university in the former Yugoslavia, the university has produced countless scientific and technological talents for the Albanian-speaking world and plays an irreplaceable central role in Kosovo’s nation-building process.
