The history of Western University dates back to 1878. Originally named “Western University of London, Ontario,” the institution was established by Bishop Isaac Helmuth under an act of the provincial legislature with the aim of creating a non-denominational institution of higher education modeled after Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Western University’s Mustangs are a key symbol of campus culture. The Mustangs football team stands out in particular, having won the OUA championship (Yates Cup) 35 times—the most of any team in the league. The men’s track and field and wrestling teams have also achieved remarkable success; for example, a female wrestler successfully defended her heavyweight title at the 2026 OUA Championships. The annual Homecoming football game is the most exciting moment on campus—tens of thousands of Purple & Gold fans watch the game and cheer on the Mustangs, with the spirit of sports deeply embedded in the “Westerners” motto.
