The Journey from Regional College to National University
The history of the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) began in 1970, when it was established as a regional technical college. In 1998, the institution was granted Institute of Technology status, becoming the first in Ireland to receive this distinction, and was the first to apply for upgrading to become Ireland’s eighth public university.
As a national university-level institution directly funded by the Irish government, WIT is one of Ireland’s largest institutes of technology. It has been repeatedly named “Star of Irish Institutes of Technology” by The Sunday Times and ranks ninth in the Global University Rankings for Ireland. In May 2022, WIT merged with Carlow Institute of Technology to form the South East Technology University (SETU), marking the beginning of a new chapter in its development.
