AUT traces its origins to the Auckland Technical School, established in 1895, and was elevated to the status of a national comprehensive research university on January 1, 2000. After more than 120 years of development, AUT has now established a structure comprising five faculties, sixteen schools, and three campuses.

Practice-Oriented Educational System
AUT embraces the educational philosophy of “connecting the classroom with the real world.” Its curriculum includes many industry collaboration components, and students participate in actual business consulting activities. For example, students with an IELTS score of 5.5 can enroll in a 16-week Academic English course combined with their main program as a bundled admission option, while undergraduate programs require an IELTS score of 6.0. This is significantly lower than the requirements at many world-renowned universities, and AUT also offers university foundation programs, certificates, and diplomas—providing diverse entry pathways so that no matter where you start, you can find a path that suits you.
AUT structures its academic pathways in a phased approach, and its three-semester system allows international students to freely choose to begin their studies in February or July. There is no longer a need to strictly align with the annual start dates, and the curriculum is organized into modular credit units. Everyone can adjust their study pace according to their own rhythm.
