Beyond the Overall Rankings: World-Class Influence in Specialised Fields
In terms of overall rankings, Goldsmiths College may not stand out—it is ranked 681st globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. However, the college’s true value lies precisely in those areas obscured by the overall rankings. As it specialises in the arts, media and social sciences, it often ‘underperforms’ or fails to feature in many general rankings. Yet within its specialist fields, Goldsmiths holds world-class standing.
In the 2026 QS World University Subject Rankings, Communication and Media Studies was ranked 18th globally and 3rd in the UK; Art and Design was ranked 26th globally and 5th in the UK. Performing Arts ranked 26th globally and 10th in the UK. Ten disciplines, including Sociology, Anthropology, Education and Psychology, all feature among the world’s best. In the 2020 QS Subject Rankings, Communication and Media Studies’ ‘academic reputation’ even reached 2nd place globally. This characteristic of ‘low-key in general rankings but strong in subject-specific rankings’ is precisely what gives Goldsmiths its most distinctive charm.
London’s only single-campus university: the true face of a creative community
The college is situated in the New Cross area of south-east London, just 5 miles away. It is a few minutes’ walk from New Cross railway station and a 10-minute train journey from London Bridge. This location, seemingly tranquil yet close to the city centre, not only allows students to immerse themselves in a close-knit campus atmosphere but also enables them to easily integrate into London, one of the world’s premier destinations for international study. As London’s only single-campus university, Goldsmiths is situated in New Cross, a treasure trove of cultural heritage—boasting a vibrant atmosphere of music and art, a wealth of fine dining restaurants, bustling cafés, and a diverse and distinctive local community. Students are drawn to over 100 societies and sports clubs, covering everything from marketing to anime and gaming.
The Cradle of the Turner Prize: Nine Winners and Countless Creative Minds
When discussing Goldsmiths, one cannot fail to mention the Turner Prize. Since its inception in 1984, nine distinguished alumni have been honoured with this highest accolade in contemporary visual art, accounting for nearly a quarter of all winners. Since 1990, there have been over 30 Turner Prize nominations. The list of distinguished alumni serves as a vivid snapshot of contemporary cultural history, featuring figures such as sculptor Antony Gormley, artist Damien Hirst, and film director Sir Steve McQueen (whose film *12 Years a Slave* won the Oscar for Best Picture). In the field of music, John Cale and Blur’s Alex James and Graham Coxon are also a source of pride for the College. Nearly a quarter of the College’s research output is recognised as ‘world-leading’, whilst over four-fifths is rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
Employment Prospects: The Solid Foundation for Creative Talent
Goldsmiths graduates also perform exceptionally well in the job market. 80 per cent of undergraduate graduates secure highly skilled roles. The College ranks in the top three in the UK for producing business founders and 12th for producing CEOs and managing directors. Multinational companies hold our graduates in the highest regard, describing them as “ambitious and proactive, capable of solving problems through creative thinking.”
