King’s College London (KCL) is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in England, founded in 1829 by King George IV and Prime Minister the Duke of Wellington in the Anglican tradition. As one of the two founding colleges of the University of London, KCL is a core member of the prestigious “Golden Triangle of Universities” and the Russell Group of Universities, and since 2008, King’s has been awarding its own degrees independently of the University of London system. History: From Royal Charter to modern research center

The founding of King’s College is itself legendary: in 1829, the Duke of Wellington was publicly challenged for his support of both the founding of King’s and the Catholic Emancipation Act, and a duel ensued in Battersea – guns were fired and no one was hurt. This unique interlude in the founding of the school adds a touch of legend to an institution that is about to go through two hundred years of glory.

For nearly two centuries, KCL has always been guided by the philosophy that learning and research should be in the service of society. The school has grown through a number of mergers: Chelsea College and Queen Elizabeth College in 1985, the British Institute of Psychiatry in 1997, and the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in 1998. These mergers have given KCL a deep medical heritage – medical education at St. Thomas’ Hospital dates back to the 16th century and at Guy’s Hospital to the early 18th century.
