No. 1 in the UK for “Value Added”—A Metric More Important Than Rankings

If you judge City, University of London solely by its overall ranking, you’ll miss its core value.

In the 2026 Guardian University Guide, City, University of London ranked first in the UK (tied with Goldsmiths, University of London) for its “Value Added score.” This score measures: how much students have improved by the time they graduate, compared to their academic performance upon enrollment. In other words, what this university excels at is helping students who start from a lower baseline reach heights far beyond expectations.

As Vice-Chancellor Professor Julie Hall said, “Rankings never tell the whole story, but they can shed light on the areas where a university truly makes a difference. “The fact that London Met ranks first in the UK for Value Added strongly reflects how we support students from all walks of life to succeed.” From the moment I received my London Metropolitan University Degree for the first time, I was overjoyed.

The university’s student body composition also illustrates this point:97% of students fall under the “wider participation” category (i.e., those from groups with traditionally low rates of higher education participation), 64% come from ethnic minority backgrounds, and 69% are adult students. Many are the first in their families to attend university, come from disadvantaged backgrounds, or need to balance work and caregiving responsibilities alongside their studies.

Ranked 9th in the UK for teaching quality and in the top 10 for student experience

In addition to the unique “value-added” metric, City, University of London also performs exceptionally well in traditional academic dimensions:

  • The 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide ranked its teaching quality 9th in the UK
  • Student experience was ranked 10th in the UK
  • In the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS), its overall satisfaction rating exceeded that of Imperial College London, University College London, King’s College London, and Queen Mary University of London
  • In the *Daily Mail* University Guide, it ranks in the top 20 in the UK for student support and in the top 50 for graduate salaries

In specific disciplines, it ranks 2nd in the UK for Interior Design, 2nd for Film Production and Photography, 16th for Fashion and Textiles, and 20th for Psychology.

“Civic University”: A Mission Rooted in the Heart of London

City, University of London calls itself the “Civic University”—this is not a marketing term, but an accurate description of how it operates. Its mission is to “change lives through the power of education” and to “tackle the inequalities facing London, improve people’s lives, and achieve social justice.”

The university collaborates with over 600 organizations, and its “London Met Lab” is dedicated to addressing major challenges in London, such as crime. At the 2023 UK Social Mobility Awards, London Metropolitan University won the Silver Award for “University of the Year”; in the 2026 Social Inclusion Index, it ranked 16th in England and Wales and was named runner-up for “University of the Year for Social Inclusion.” It has closed the gap in high-skilled employment between Black, Asian, and minority ethnic students and white students.

Europe’s Largest “Super Lab” and a 150 Million Pound Campus Investment

When it comes to facilities, City, University of London spares no expense. Its 30 million pound Science Center, with 280 workstations, is one of Europe’s largest science teaching laboratories. Additionally, there are mock courtrooms, a 100,000 pound newsroom, art and design studios, and recording studios.

The university is implementing a £150 million campus investment plan to redevelop the Holloway campus and upgrade facilities in Shoreditch, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Starting in the 2025–26 academic year, the School of Art, Architecture, and Design will relocate to three newly developed sites in Shoreditch, Holloway, and Aldgate, equipped with open-plan studios with skylights, digital workshops, design labs, and IT suites.
