Campus Location and Transportation

London Guildhall University’s campuses are spread across multiple locations in the City of London and the Aldgate area of East London. The main campuses include Calcutta House, Central House, Whitechapel High Street, Commercial Road, Tower Hill, Jewry Street, and Moorgate. All campuses are within walking distance of one another, making transportation extremely convenient.

As a transportation hub for the United Kingdom and the world, London provides the university with unparalleled accessibility. London is easily accessible from across the UK by rail or road, while international students can conveniently enter the country via major airports such as London City Airport (only 9.7 kilometers away) and Heathrow Airport (25.8 kilometers away). Within the city, the subway, bus, and train networks are extensive and well-connected. Moorgate subway station is just a 2-minute walk from the campus, while Liverpool Street and Bank stations are both within a 7-minute walk. Multiple subway lines (Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern) and bus routes (100, 141, 21, 43, 76, etc.) intersect here.

The City’s Economy and Culture

As a world-class metropolis, London’s economic and cultural vibrancy offers students at London Guildhall University an unparalleled learning and living experience. The word “Guildhall” in the university’s name has deep historical ties to the City of London and the city’s guilds, reflecting its close connection to the city’s heritage. The university’s name was chosen after careful research and consultation to provide a geographical reference and establish a link to the City of London, where the Guildhall is located. London offers a wealth of music, entertainment, dining options, museums, art galleries, shops, and nightlife. The university is surrounded by theaters of all sizes, movie theaters, live music venues, and countless restaurants. When it comes to sports, world-class facilities are scattered throughout the city, from soccer matches at Wembley Stadium to tennis tournaments at Wimbledon, and from cricket to rugby. More importantly, the multicultural background of the student body reflects the overall diversity of London as a global metropolis.

Library Resources and Collections

London Guildhall University has three libraries with extensive collections. These include approximately 200,000 books, 3,000 videotapes, 1,200 periodicals, 80,000 slides, as well as more than 30 computer-based services and CD-ROM databases. In addition, the university operates the specialized Fawcett Library, which houses a vast collection of valuable materials on the women’s movement. Of particular note is The Women’s Library, which houses the most comprehensive collection of materials on women’s history and culture in the United Kingdom. Most departments have access to the campus network, making it easy for students to access electronic resources.

Career Development Center Support

The university provides students with a comprehensive support service system, including academic advising and career guidance. As an institution deeply rooted in the City of London, London Guildhall University leverages its geographical advantage to help students establish professional connections with this global business hub. The university’s investment in career development lays a solid foundation for its students to enter a wide range of industries after graduation. Its predecessor institution—City of London College—was a pioneer in introducing business and technology disciplines, and this tradition of emphasizing practical skills and career development continues to this day. The university’s extensive offering of part-time professional programs also reflects its firm commitment to lifelong learning and career development.

University Accreditation and Professional Qualifications

London Guildhall University was granted university status in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act, thereby gaining the autonomy to award degrees. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the university ranked 30th among the 43 “new universities” in the United Kingdom.

The university’s academic roots date back to 1848. Its predecessor, the London City Polytechnic, accumulated a rich academic heritage and extensive experience in professional education over more than a century of development. The university offers a wide range of programs in fields such as the arts, media and design, business and management, civil aviation, computer science, engineering, law, and psychology.

On August 1, 2002, London Guildhall University merged with the University of North London to form City University London—the first “new university” in British history to be created through the merger of two universities. This historic merger not only continued the academic traditions of London Guildhall University but also propelled its educational mission into a new phase of development. Today, its former campus has become an integral part of City University London’s City Campus, continuing to provide high-quality higher education to students from around the world.
