An Educational Legacy Spanning Three Centuries
NDU’s history dates back to 1736, when the Maronite Sisters of Notre Dame convened in Mount Lebanon, vowing to promote education throughout Lebanon and advocating for “free education for all.” In 1987, through Presidential Decree No. 4116, NDU was officially granted university status and was established at the Louaize Monastery in Lebanon. In 1998, the institution relocated to the Jouk Mosbeh campus, 15 kilometers north of Beirut. Situated at an elevation of 100 meters, the campus overlooks the magnificent Bay of Jounieh. From its Maronite roots to its current status as an international flagship institution serving three campuses and offering 76 majors, NDU has chronicled the transformative history of Catholic higher education in Lebanon.
A Rare Regional Accreditation of Global Prestige
NDU’s academic quality is widely recognized across the Middle East and North Africa. It is the only university in the Middle East accredited by NECHE and the only Catholic university in the region to hold this distinction. NECHE accreditation is rigorous, signifying that NDU’s curriculum, faculty, and degree conferral meet the standards of top-tier private universities. With fewer than five institutions in the Middle East holding NECHE accreditation, NDU stands as the sole private Catholic institution among them, sharing the same academic quality framework as certain Ivy League universities.
NDU’s professional accreditation portfolio is even more comprehensive: all undergraduate engineering programs have received ABET international accreditation; the Business School holds dual accreditation from AACSB and ACCA, ranking among the top 6% of business schools globally; the Advertising and Marketing program holds exclusive accreditation from the IAA, making NDU the only university in Lebanon to receive this distinction; and the Film and Television program is accredited by CILECT (International Association of Film and Television Schools), reflecting excellence in creative education. These authoritative accreditations collectively establish NDU’s academic strength.
