Roehampton University is one of the few traditional collegiate universities in the United Kingdom. Upon enrollment, students are assigned to one of four historic colleges: Digby Stuart (1874), Froebel (1892), Southlands, and Whitelands (1841). Whitelands College is one of the oldest teacher-training institutions in England. From the 19th to the 21st Century: A Journey of Milestones
The history of the University of Roehampton dates back to the establishment of Whitelands College in 1841. The four founding colleges were originally teacher-training institutions and were among the first higher education institutions in the UK to admit female students. In 1975, the four colleges merged to form the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education; it became an independent university in 2004; and was renamed the University of Roehampton in 2011.
